2GetHer – „It’s a man’s world,“ says James Brown’s famous song. In his new choreography, Riccardo de Nigris sheds light on the relationship between men and women, often characterized by misunderstanding, violence, ignorance, and, on the other hand, presents the vision of a harmonious, equal society. In the course of the play, a turnaround is gradually taking place: at first, the sexes are irreconcilably opposed; Men are aggressive and immature, while women hold together, showing emotion and social skills. A man takes off, a dreamer who makes efforts to build bridges between the fronts. He does not give up until he makes the actors work together instead of against each other. His suitcase takes live pictures to be projected; finally a group picture emerges: „it’s better together“.
Riccardo De Nigris uses dancing techniques to explore the play of repulsion and attraction; Movement patterns set in counterpoint alternate with those that are first tried out, then passed on, spread, and finally join the group into a whole. The scene thrives on contrasts and tension: between the individual and the group, between fast and slow passages, expansive movements and stagnation, chaos and order, great gestures and the smallest movements.
The stage is a field of experimentation, a laboratory of relationships. Simple objects as play material stand for energy, communication and emotion, set the action in motion and are in turn animated by the dance. The central requisite is a block that constantly changes its position and meaning, from the table to the staircase, to the hiding place, to the transition into another world. When, in the end, all the actors have become a community, the group almost ritually assembles the individual elements into a final image, giving the theme a face: „it’s a women’s world“.
